12 Questions to Ask Before You Sign Anything for Cheer or Competitive Dance

Before committing to a gym or program, ask:

The 12 Questions

  1. 1What is the full, written, season-long cost, tuition, choreography, music, uniforms, competition fees, travel, not just the monthly rate?
  2. 2What specific USASF level is my child's coach certified to, and does it match the skill level the team actually performs?
  3. 3Is the coaching staff also USA Cheer safety-certified?
  4. 4Is spotting actively, properly executed for every stunt attempt?
  5. 5What is the gym's protocol if a fall occurs during stunting or tumbling?
  6. 6Are any of this season's competitions "stay-to-play," and what is the actual required cost compared to booking independently?
  7. 7Are there hidden fees (resort fees, booking fees) layered onto required hotel stays?
  8. 8Is "Worlds" attendance a realistic, recently-achieved goal for this specific team, or aspirational marketing?
  9. 9Are private lessons "recommended," or quietly required for team placement?
  10. 10Can you watch a live practice, specifically observing stunt/tumbling spotting, before signing?
  11. 11What is the gym's policy on injury reporting and return-to-skill progression after a fall or injury?
  12. 12How many athletes from this specific program have gone on to college cheer/dance programs, and with what level of financial support, verifiably?

Red Flags to Walk Away From

  • A coach running stunts above their certified level.
  • No clear concussion or fall-injury protocol.
  • Mandatory stay-to-play booking with no upfront disclosure or cost comparison.
  • "Worlds"-focused marketing with no verifiable recent program history at that level.
  • A gym that won't let you watch a practice and observe spotting technique directly.
