How to Look Up Any Travel Club (Free, Public Records)

Before you write a check, spend 10 minutes checking who is really behind the club. These records are free and public. This page does not rate or rank any club. It shows you where to look. This works for any youth travel club: soccer, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball, dance/cheer, and flag football.

Step 01

Find the club's legal name

The legal name is often different from the name on the jersey. Public records are filed under the legal name, so searching the jersey name may turn up nothing.

You can usually find the legal name in one of three places:

  • /The bottom of the club's website
  • /The registration paperwork
  • /The payment receipt

Step 02

Look it up in your state

Use the official state links below to search the legal name from Step 1. Available details and search fees vary by state.

A note on the registered agent: this is the legal contact who receives official notices for the business. It is not necessarily the owner or the person who runs the club. A state record also confirms that a business is registered. It is not an endorsement of quality.

Step 03

Check if it is a real nonprofit

Calling itself a nonprofit and being one on file are two different things. These two free tools show what the IRS has on record.

Most tax exempt organizations file a yearly return called the Form 990. In plain English, the Form 990 shows how much money comes in and how it is spent. Tax exempt status is a tax category, not a sign that a club is good.

Step 04

Questions to ask

  1. Is it a nonprofit or a for-profit business?
  2. When was it formed?
  3. Who runs it?
  4. Does the money coming in match what is spent on the kids?

Ask for numbers, not adjectives.

Common Questions

How do I check if a youth sports club is a nonprofit?

Find the club's legal name, then search it in your state's Secretary of State business search, which shows whether it is an LLC, a corporation, or a nonprofit. Then search the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search to see whether the IRS lists it as tax exempt. Tax exempt status is a legal and tax category, not a sign of quality.

Where can I see a travel club's Form 990?

Search the club's legal name in ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer or the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. The Form 990 shows how much money comes in and how it is spent.

How do I find out who owns my kid's club?

Start with the club's legal name, often found at the bottom of its website, in registration paperwork, or on a payment receipt. Search it in your state's business records to see when it was formed and who the registered agent is. The registered agent is the legal contact for official notices and is not necessarily the owner, so ask the club directly who runs it.
