What's Realistic, and What's Marketing
Unlike most sports on this site, cheer and dance don't have a standardized NCAA participation/scholarship pipeline, which makes the "pathway" conversation fundamentally different here.
The "Worlds" Reality
Competing at the sport's most prestigious international-style championship event ("Worlds") is a genuine, real achievement, but it represents a very small fraction of All-Star programs nationally. Marketing that frames "Worlds" as a realistic, default goal for a typical competitive team sets expectations that don't match the actual structure of the sport, where only a small number of programs at the highest level genuinely compete for it each year.
The College Pathway: Genuinely Different From Other Sports Here
There is no standardized NCAA scholarship pathway for cheer/dance the way there is for soccer, basketball, or volleyball. College opportunities exist, competitive college cheer and dance programs are real, and some offer partial financial support, but they're inconsistent and far less structured than the NCAA divisional system covering most other sports on this site. Don't assume a clear, predictable pipeline exists; research specific college programs' actual offerings directly rather than relying on general assumptions carried over from other sports.
Honest Framing for Families
If the value proposition for your family rests heavily on a "path to college scholarship money," cheer/dance is one of the weaker bets on this site for that specific goal, compared to a headcount sport like basketball or volleyball. The stronger, more honest value case for cheer/dance usually rests on the activity itself, skill development, team experience, and (for some) the genuine achievement of competing at a high level, rather than a reliable financial return.
