Why Hockey Costs $7,000–$20,000+ a Year, and Where the Money Actually Goes
Hockey's cost structure is fundamentally different from every other sport on this site. Ice time is a finite, capital-intensive resource. Rinks are expensive to build and operate, and there simply aren't enough of them in most regions to meet demand cheaply. That scarcity, combined with rapidly outgrown equipment and long travel distances between rinks, makes hockey the most expensive sport we cover.

Why Ice Time Is the Unique Cost Driver
No other sport on this site requires renting a scarce, climate-controlled facility just to practice. Rink availability is limited in most regions outside traditional hockey hotbeds, which pushes both price and travel distance up simultaneously, families often drive or fly to reach adequate ice time and competitive-level tournaments.
