What the Odds Actually Mean
A low odds result is not a reason to stop playing travel sports. Most families who participate in travel sports are doing it for development, competition, friendship, and love of the sport. Those are valid and valuable reasons that do not require a scholarship outcome to justify the investment. What the odds result should change is the financial decision-making framework. A family spending $15,000 per year in pursuit of a scholarship that has a 1-2% probability of materializing is making a different financial calculation than a family spending $15,000 per year because their child loves the sport and the experience is worth it to them. Both families can make the right decision, but only if they are working with honest information.
